Cristobal Maldonado Obituary

Cristobal G. Maldonado, aged 78, of Garland, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025.

Born on January 14, 1947, in San Benito, Texas, Cristobal lived a life filled with love and dedication. He dedicated many years to his career as a correctional officer in Cameron County and also worked at the Cameron County Restitution Center, where he was instrumental in helping rehabilitate inmates. His commitment to service and rehabilitation showcased his strong character and belief in second chances.

In addition to his public service career, Cristobal owned a business selling artificial plants and trees. He often included his children and nieces and nephews in the process of creating beautiful arrangements. These experiences not only fostered family bonding but also helped build character and improve communication skills for all involved. Together, they enjoyed selling their creations at flea markets around the Rio Grande Valley, creating lasting memories while working as a team.

Cristobal is survived by his devoted wife, Sylvia Lopez Maldonado, who cared for him until he earned his wings; son Cristobal Maldonado, Jr.; daughter-in-law Nicole Alexander; grandchildren Alex, Will, and Brady Maldonado; and great-granddaughter Julianne (Alex) Maldonado. He is also survived by his brothers Frank Franco, discovered in 2021; Alejo Maldonado; and sister Rosie Maldonado. He was preceded in death by his son Daniel Lopez Maldonado; brothers Rey Maldonado, Pedro Maldonado, and Daniel Maldonado; sister Linda Delgado; and his parents, Alejo Maldonado and Herlinda Maldonado.

Known for his warmth and generosity, Cristobal took his responsibilities as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandpa, uncle, and godfather to heart, always prioritizing the needs and happiness of his family. He was a godfather to many and cherished the special bond he shared with each of them. Cristobal had a passion for barbecuing, which created countless cherished family memories at the Brownsville house. He would often gather family and friends around the grill, cooking delicious meals that fostered love and connection, as stories were shared, laughter echoed, and bonds strengthened. Cristobal would often say at the barbecues, “No está quemado,” meaning “It's not burned,” as he enjoyed sharing good food and good times with everyone around him.

A celebration of Cristobal’s life will be held on the date and location provided below. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Brady and Julianne Maldonado for their college funds.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

His final resting place will be Royse City Cemetery in Royse City, Texas.
